Jeremy Hillman Named Director of External Communications at the Foundation

SEATTLE--Jeremy Hillman, a veteran journalist with the British Broadcasting Corporation, will join the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation as director of external communications on August 22, 2011. He will report to the foundation’s chief communications officer and be based in Seattle. Hillman will lead the foundation’s global external communications team, which supports the foundation’s programs through strategic media relations.
“We are thrilled to have Jeremy join the communications team,” said Kate James, Chief Communications Officer. “He brings a depth and breadth of experience leading an innovative global news organization, which will be critical to helping the foundation communicate its work and the work of its partners and grantees to an international audience.”
Most recently, Hillman was head of the BBC’s Business and Economics Department, responsible for a team of over 150 journalists covering the global financial crisis in the United Kingdom and worldwide. During that time the BBC won numerous awards for the depth and quality of its business coverage. Previously, Hillman was editor at BBC World News, the corporation’s global, commercial 24-hour news network, where he oversaw a large audience increase to 78 million viewers a week.
Hillman holds a diploma in Broadcast Journalism from Cardiff University and a law degree from Bristol University.
