First Step Family Support Center Crosses Halfway Point in Campaign To Pay Off Community Center

PORT ANGELES, Wash. –- The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation recently announced a $40,000 grant to First Step Family Support Center’s “Big Yellow House” capital campaign. The campaign initiated by First Step’s Board in 2004 has reached the halfway point in its goal to pay off the mortgage on its facility at 325 E. 6th St., the site of the former “Bennett House.”

First Step purchased the rebuilt house in early 2002. With the generous assistance of several volunteers, community service clubs and local businesses, it remodeled the facility into a community center for families with young children. First Step serves primarily low-income families with children from zero to six years of age in Clallam County. Each month First Step serves about 600 people in its Drop-In Center, parent education and support groups, and other programs at its “Big Yellow House” location.
