Seattle Emergency Housing Service receives $25,000 grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

SEATTLE -- Seattle Emergency Housing Service (SEHS) recently received a $25,000 grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to develop and provide housing and supportive services for homeless families seeking to achieve self-sufficiency.

SEHS has been nationally recognized for its innovative approach to breaking the cycle of homelessness. The grant will help SEHS meet its mission of providing emergency shelter and transitional housing units with individual case management, mental health and substance abuse counseling, on-site daycare, and a life skills course.

"We are thrilled to have been awarded this grant," said SEHS Executive Director Kurt Wuellner. "This will go a long way in helping SEHS continue to serve the increasing number of homeless families with children."

Established in 1972, Seattle Emergency Housing Service was one of the first agencies in the nation to provide emergency housing, specifically for homeless families. The agency now provides both short-term emergency shelter and longer-term transitional housing. Most recently, SEHS has expanded its services to include an on-site computer lab and tutoring center for homeless children in the SEHS Youth Program. These programs and services offer homeless families the resources they need to become more independent.
