Helping Hands for the Disabled Receives $20,000 Gift to Replace Floor Covering in Three Homes

BELLEVUE, Wash. -- Helping Hands for the Disabled (HHD), a nonprofit agency that operates three residential homes for the developmentally disabled, will be replacing the floor coverings in each of the agency's three homes thanks to a $20,000 grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Twenty-one residents are currently being served by HHD. The agency runs and maintains three residential programs on the Eastside: Champion House and Halcyon in Bellevue, Wash. and Visions, located in Kirkland, Wash., which serves five people who are developmentally disabled and medically fragile.

"What a pleasant surprise to receive a gift from Bill and Melinda Gates," said Cheryl Varner, President of HHD's Board of Directors. "It's amazing to see the number of people they're helping through their global gifts, but what a refreshing and exciting thing to know they're also concerned about helping us provide a comfortable home for our residents."

Helping Hands for the Disabled was founded in 1975, and is managed by an eight-member volunteer board of directors. Champion House was built in 1983. Halcyon was built in 1987 and Visions opened in 1991.
