MEXICO -- Mexfam today announced the receipt of a $2.5 million grant from Bill and Melinda Gates to support the expansion and enhancement of the Gente Joven (Young People) Program.
The Gente Joven Program targets Mexican youth, with the objective of promoting values associated with sexual health, such as reproductive responsibility, gender equity, communication and love between people. The gift from Bill and Melinda Gates will allow this program to expand into three additional States: Sinaloa, Nayarti and Coahuila.
When the expansion is complete, Mexfam will reach 250,000 youth through teaching courses on sexual health and life planning to youth; training health professionals; organizing workshops for parents; and hosting plays, rock concerts and recreational activities, organized by the youth themselves.
Mexfam is the Mexican Family Planning Association. Founded in 1965, Mexfam provides quality and state of the art services in family planning, sexual health and education to the young and the poor, in many of the most impoverished areas of Mexico.
