Dr. Margaret Liu to join the Global Health program at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

SEATTLE -- The Global Health Program at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has named Margaret Liu, M.D., its new Senior Advisor for Vaccinology.
The Foundation's Global Health Program has invested over $1 billion in vaccine development and immunization programs. More than $220 million has been committed to vaccine development for AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and other parasitic diseases, and measles. In her new position, Dr. Liu will assist the Foundation in monitoring and enhancing the progress of these programs and in identifying new opportunities for investment.
"Dr. Liu has extensive experience in vaccine development in the industrial sector with a commitment to developing products to benefit populations in developing countries," said Dr. Gordon Perkin, Director of the Global Health Program at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. "She will greatly strengthen the work we do in vaccines."
Most recently, Dr. Liu was a consultant to various projects in the areas of vaccine research and gene therapy. Previously, she was Vice President of Vaccine Research and Gene Therapy at the Chiron Corporation, a biotech firm in California, and a Senior Director at Merck & Co., Inc., Kenilworth NJ USA. Dr. Liu also has served on the faculty of the Harvard Medical School.

In addition to overseeing the Foundation's vaccine work, Dr. Liu will assist the World Health Organization, the Global Fund for Children's Vaccines and other agencies with vaccine-related activities.
