Statement by Bill and Melinda Gates Upon Notification of Receiving the Prince of Asturias Award for International Cooperation 2006

"We are honored to receive the prestigious Prince of Asturias Award for International Cooperation on behalf of the work of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. We are especially pleased that this award recognizes that the combined efforts and talents of dedicated people across the globe can lead to solutions to some of humanity's most pressing problems.

"Our work with the foundation has provided us with opportunities to learn from and collaborate with people from many countries and from many different walks of life. We are optimistic that by working together, we can reduce the world's greatest inequities and ensure that more people have the opportunity to live up to their fullest potential.
