$24 Million Investment Launches Campaign to Build a Model Urban School District in Oakland – Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) and Bay Area Coalition for Equitable Schools (BayCES) today announced $24 million in investments to support Expect Success! an effort to create a model urban school district in Oakland. The initiative is garnering national support with backing from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Broad Foundation and the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, as well as several key local funders and companies.

“Expect Success! demands student achievement, accountability, and the equitable distribution of resources, nothing more, nothing less,” said Dr. Randolph E. Ward, state administrator of the Oakland Unified School District. “It insists that all who have a stake in the future of our children and public education step forward and work for change, as the quality of life and economic health of the Bay Area depend on it.”
