Institute for Family Development Receives $200,000 Grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. -- The Institute for Family Development, the parent agency of the internationally renowned HOMEBUILDERS program, today announced it has been awarded a $200,000 grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to aid the Institute in purchasing a $1.25 million office building.

 

"We are grateful the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has given us the opportunity to free up dollars, which we can then put to use in our direct services programs," says Charlotte Booth, executive director of the Institute for Family Development. "With their help, we can now use our resources to support and develop services for high-risk families."

 

The Institute's new acquisition is an example of a non-profit agency using entrepreneurial endeavors to increase revenue. This purchase not only provides the Institute with a permanent residence, but is also part of a long-term investment strategy. The income generated from leasing part of the office space will supplement the agency's revenue. With this investment, the agency can use existing income to continue providing its nationally recognized services for low-income, high-risk families throughout Washington State.  

 

The Institute for Family Development delivers cost-effective, innovative solutions to the problems facing high-risk, low-income families through services, research, training, and advocacy.  The Institute utilizes integrated approaches to combat the growing problems of unnecessary family dissolution, child abuse and neglect, juvenile delinquency, and family conflict.  The Institute's HOMEBUILDERS program is internationally renown, and is the oldest and best-documented Intensive Family Preservation Services program in the country.  Based in Federal Way, WA and with offices throughout Washington State, the Institute for Family Development was founded in 1982 and is a private, non-profit agency.
