Treehouse Receives $150,000 Grant from Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

SEATTLE -- Treehouse, a local nonprofit that helps foster children and children who are abused and neglected in King County, announced it has received a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The grant will support services to help children build their self-esteem and ability to cope under difficult and unusual circumstances.

"Treehouse offers many different services to help abused and neglected children in King County," Janis Avery, Treehouse managing director said. "This grant from the Gates Foundation will help us ensure that these programs are available for years to come."

The funds will contribute to the maintenance and growth of Treehouse programs, including the Tutoring Program, Little Wishes, the Summer Camp Program, and the Wearhouse over the next three years.
  • The Tutoring Program assists children struggling in school because of frequent uprooting in their lives.
  • The Little Wishes Program helps fund sports, education and arts opportunities for at-risk kids.
  • The Camp Program gives kids the opportunity to spend a week at camp, lifting them from abusive and neglectful home situations.
  • The Wearhouse is a retail-like distribution center where children may obtain clothes, toys, books, backpacks and hygiene products to fill basic needs.
Treehouse's mission is to restore hope and self-esteem to foster children, as well as children who are abused and neglected, helping them to reach their potential as stable, self-supporting community members.
