PORTLAND, Ore. -- Outside In, a facility that serves Portland's homeless youth, today announced a $1 million gift from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The grant will go towards Outside In's new facility that will provide 20 transitional housing units for homeless youth, as well as additional space for clients, volunteers and staff.
"We are very appreciative of this gift from Bill and Melinda Gates," said Kathy J. Oliver, executive director for Outside In. "This funding will enable us to continue our success in giving homeless youth a future off of the streets."
To date, the organization has received $750,000 from Meyer Memorial Trust; $750,000 from the City of Portland/Portland Development Commission; $100,000 from the First Unitarian Church of Portland; $50,000 from the Collins Foundation; and $350,000 in private-donor gifts. These pledges, combined with the gift from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, puts Outside In within $500,000 of its $3.5 million capital campaign goal.
