Pacific Science Center Completes Three Capital Expansion Projects in 1998-99 Fiscal Year

SEATTLE -- Pacific Science Center completed three capital expansion projects during the fiscal year ending June 30, 1999, and received a grant of $551,000 from Bill and Melinda Gates in support of the Tropical Butterfly House and Insect Village exhibits. Executive Director George Moynihan made the announcements at the Pacific Science Center Foundation's 36th annual meeting on June 8, 1999. Also announced were new board officers, board members and Foundation Associates.

"The 1998-99 fiscal year was a time of tremendous growth with the opening of the Boeing IMAX® Theater, the Ackerley Family Exhibit Gallery and the James Albert Claypool Memorial Garage," Moynihan said. "Extraordinary community support of our Capital Improvement and Expansion Campaign, including this award from Bill and Melinda Gates through the William H. Gates Foundation, has made this growth possible."

The William H. Gates Foundation gift is the largest private gift Pacific Science Center received during the 1998-99 fiscal year, and brings the total amount raised during the Capital Improvement and Expansion Campaign to $40.7 million. An additional $174,000 will be raised to meet the project costs of $40.9 million. Other gifts received this year include: United States Government, Doris Gaudette, Bagley Wright, Tom Alberg and Judi Beck, The Coca-Cola Foundation, Callison Architecture, Inc., Davis Wright Tremaine LLP, Mr. and Mrs. Joshua Green, III, Joshua Green Foundation, Nesholm Family Foundation, and Jeff and Patricia Raikes.

During the meeting, the following board officers were elected: David L. Fluke of Fluke Capital Management was elected honorary chair; Boh* A. Dickey of SAFECO Corporation was elected chair; Lawrence P. Horwitz of Northwest Lodging, Inc. was elected president; John V. Rindlaub of Seafirst Bank was elected president-elect; Chris Larson of Microsoft Corporation was elected vice president; Phyllis Campbell of U.S. Bank, John D. Warner of The Boeing Company and Janet Sinegal of Bellevue were re-elected vice presidents; Richard E. Jones of Ernst and Young was re-elected treasurer; and Marlene Durbin of Bellevue was re-elected secretary. Two new board members were elected: Jeff Cook of Penford Corporation and Ed Fritzky of Immunex Corporation. Also elected was board intern Howard Tang.

In addition to the board members and officers, George Simmons, Ph.D. of Seattle University was elected a new Foundation Associate, and 28 Foundation Associates were elected to serve another term. Foundation Associates are the voting members of Pacific Science Center who elect the board of directors and assist and critique the development of Pacific Science Center policies and management operations. In addition, Foundation Associates act as goodwill ambassadors for Pacific Science Center and contribute financially and personally to Pacific Science Center's activities and affairs.
