Postsecondary Education

A high school education is not enough to compete in today’s global economy. Yet by age 30 most Americans have not earned a college degree or certificate. Our Postsecondary Success Strategy aims to dramatically increase the number of young adults who complete their postsecondary education, setting them up for success in the workplace and in life.
Why College Completion?
Our education system is not preparing students for the demands of a knowledge-based economy and a robust democracy. It’s critical to get this right, so that our nation’s young people and their families have the opportunity for success and financial security.
Community Colleges
We are focusing our efforts on helping community colleges improve their completion rates because they are flexible, affordable, and accessible institutions that enroll the largest number of low-income students.
Students First
Many high school students are not graduating college-ready, and colleges struggle to serve them adequately. That is why we’re aiming to provide today’s students with the information and support they need to complete their education.
Innovation and Technology
As part of our strategy, we are encouraging the development of new models of postsecondary education and the innovative use of technology to help meet the needs of more students at a higher quality with a lower cost.
Education and the Workplace
There’s no doubt that education is the most important factor in expanding one’s career options, and that students struggle to combine school and work. As a result, employers and industries have become increasingly important partners.
