The Purchase for Progress (P4P) initiative is designed to help the World Food Program (WFP) purchase more food from poor farmers in developing nations. WFP is a major food buyer. In 2010, it purchased more than $1 billion in food from 96 nations, with most of that coming from developed countries.
P4P is helping farming families increase their incomes. It also reduces the cost of importing food from other countries and helps improve long-term food security by strengthening local agricultural systems.
As the majority of the world’s poorest people lives in rural areas and relies on agriculture for their food and income, P4P's purchasing from smallholder farmers is an important step towards reducing hunger and poverty.
