Malaria kills 2,000 African children every day, and yet, according to a new study, spending on malaria research falls far short of the amount needed. Three foundation grants announced in October 2005, totaling $258.3 million, will help our partners take advantage of exciting new scientific opportunities in the fight against the disease.
Researchers are making strides on a vaccine and inexpensive, effective drugs. Meanwhile, better insecticides and bed nets promise to help control malaria in the immediate future. Each grantee has devised a plan to ensure that these new tools, once developed, are affordable and available in developing countries. Read the grant announcement, and learn more about our grantees and their work.
The Malaria Vaccine Initiative (MVI)
MVI will work with GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals and African investigators to complete testing and apply for licensure of the most advanced malaria vaccine candidate.

Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV)
MMV will work with public and private sector partners to accelerate the development of several promising new drugs through regulatory approval.

The Innovative Vector Control Consortium (IVCC)
IVCC, led by the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, will fast-track development of improved insecticides and other methods of mosquito control methods.
