At the “Get Schooled” conference, U.S. Deputy Secretary of Education Tony Miller says the stars are aligned for true education reform. He highlights the efforts of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, and how its $100 billion in funds is keeping teachers in classrooms; modernizing schools; allowing more students to pay for college; and making it easier for adults to gain new job skills. The White House is also driving reform by prompting states to raise standards, invest in teacher quality, and turn around their lowest-performing students.
But Washington recognizes it can only go so far in making an impact in the classroom. In this video, Miller explains why creative public/private partnerships like Get Schooled are crucial. “Too many of our kids today only aspire to be movie stars, recording artists, and professional athletes. What’s unique about this campaign is it encourages young children to think more broadly about what it means to be a success.”
