Joel Klein: Tough Medicine

New York City schools chancellor Joel Klein is a graduate of the school system he now runs. At the Get Schooled conference, he talks about his childhood in a housing project and the physics teacher who raised his expectations of what he could achieve in life. “That goal should be the same for all children: to teach them how to raise their own expectations and show them how they can succeed by working hard in school.”

In this video, Klein gives details of his “Children First” reform strategy--both the strict accountability it imposes on the city’s educators and the beneficial results it has achieved in the past decade. Now Klein is focused on the second phase: increasing the use of technology, and improving teacher excellence. “It’s tough medicine we’re using, but our kids are entitled to it.”
