Los Angeles has some of the highest numbers of homeless children and English-language learners in the nation, but that’s no excuse for giving up on public schools, says Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. After an introduction by Brad Grey, Mayor Villaraigosa, a graduate of the city’s public school system, talked about his Partnership for Los Angeles Schools and introduced some of its hard-working students.
Of the 10 lowest-performing schools in the Partnership, in just one year’s time, nine scored higher in English and reading skills and eight have improved in math abilities. In this video, Villaraigosa explains how he plans to expand the program’s achievements across the entire school system in 2010, and what roles parents, teachers, and communities must play to ensure success. “We have some of the smartest kids here in L.A.. If we set expectations for them and give them support, they will reach for the stars and follow their dreams.”
