Bill Gates kicks off the Get Schooled conference by explaining why education makes up the majority of the foundation’s funding in the United States. As the country drops from first in the world to tenth in the percentage of teenagers attending college--and minority students have a greater chance of going to prison than getting a four-year college diploma--it’s clear that we haven’t achieved equal opportunity in education. But Gates is optimistic that America’s school system can be improved.
“It might be a tough economy, but understanding how to keep the best teachers, improve their quality, and using new technology is even more important at this time.” In this speech, he highlights the need for measuring a teacher’s effectiveness; why the use of video can help improve teaching in the classroom; and what educators can learn from some charter schools about engaging and inspiring their students.
