Gates Millennium Scholarships: Helping Students Make a Difference

Gates Millennium Scholarships help underwrite the education of promising minority students, who in many cases have overcome significant obstacles. This video tells the story of Dr. Walt Besio, a professor of biomedical engineering at the University of Rhode Island. Dr. Besio was awarded a scholarship for his research on an electrode that translates thoughts into electrical impulses and helps people who are paralyzed regain the ability to control objects in their environment.
