Gates’ Recognized for Pioneering Philanthropy Dedicated to Solving Problems that Impede Human Development

WASHINGTON -- The Fulbright Association will award the 2010 J. William Fulbright Prize for International Understanding to Bill and Melinda Gates on Oct. 15 at a ceremony at the U.S. Library of Congress. The Fulbright Prize recognizes the Gates’ philanthropic work to improve the health, education, and well-being of people around the globe and their leadership in inspiring others to practice philanthropy.

The Fulbright Association created the J. William Fulbright Prize for International Understanding in 1993 to recognize people or organizations that have made extraordinary contributions to fostering international awareness and understanding. Bill and Melinda Gates are the first Fulbright Prize laureates with backgrounds in business and philanthropy. They are also the first couple to receive the award.

Guided by the belief that every life has equal value, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation works to help all people lead healthy, productive lives. In developing countries, it focuses on improving people’s health and giving them the chance to lift themselves out of hunger and extreme poverty. In the United States, it seeks to ensure that all people—especially those with the fewest resources—have access to the opportunities they need to succeed in school and life. Based in Seattle, Washington, the foundation is led by CEO Jeff Raikes and Co-chair William H. Gates Sr., under the direction of Bill and Melinda Gates and Warren Buffett.
