Exploring a novel approach to malaria control.

Studies conducted in Tanzania have suggested that giving infants a few doses of antimalarial drugs could be a safe and effective way of preventing the worst effects of the malaria. The Intermittent Preventive Treatment in Infants (IPTi) Consortium is leading an international effort to gather needed data on this innovative approach and lay the groundwork to implement it in developing countries. In 2004, the Consortium partners received foundation grants totaling $16 million.
