Need Is High for Early Learning Services in Two Demonstration Communities

Baseline measurements for a demonstration project to improve early learning opportunities and kindergarten readiness in two Washington state communities showed that children in East Yakima and White Center had a high need for services.

A 2008 report shows that:

  • Children in these communities are less ready to enter kindergarten than the national average.
  • Risk factors, such as family poverty and mother’s limited education, are high among these children.
  • Early learning opportunities in East Yakima and White Center—from early care and education to parent education and family support—are insufficient to meet family needs.
  • The quality of early care and education services ranges from minimal to good.
