2010 Progress Report: Business Training for Coffee Farm Households in East Africa

Grantee: TechnoServe

August 10, 2010

This grant met or exceeded all of its overall program targets and remained on track to meet its overall goals.

Building momentum: Working closely with local governments and research institutions, TechnoServe created a solid team of agricultural trainers in Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, and Tanzania whose sessions have been in high demand. Women make up 45 percent of the trainers and managers, which helps attract more women farmers to the trainings.

Farmers are benefiting: Farmers have increased their incomes more than anticipated thanks to strong demand among specialty buyers for their high-quality coffee. TechnoServe has worked with local banks to secure financing for smallholder coffee farmers to make investments on their farms.

Challenges encountered: Introducing the large number of new staff to TechnoServe’s culture, values, and process took more training than anticipated. The global financial crisis made it difficult for some farmers to access credit without loan guarantees by TechnoServe. TechnoServe’s goal of measuring the impact this grant is having on improving the health of farming families remains a challenge because of the prohibitively large sample sizes that would be required. Instead, TechnoServe will measure household expenditures on health.
