Alexander S. Friedman is the chief financial officer for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Friedman oversees a variety of departments for the foundation, including Finance, Financial Planning & Analysis, Strategic Planning, Impact Planning and Improvement, and a number of special initiatives.
Before joining the foundation in 2007, Friedman worked as an investment banker with Lazard. Prior, he led corporate development at Medarex, a publicly held biotechnology company. He also served as a White House Fellow and as an assistant to the secretary of defense for special projects in the Clinton administration.
Friedman holds a Juris Doctorate from Columbia Law School, a Master of Business Administration from Columbia Business School, and a Bachelor of Arts from Princeton University. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and serves on the boards of trustees of the Seattle Art Museum and the Access Fund.
