The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria is a public-private partnership created to dramatically increase funding for global health. With investments from all sectors of society— governments, private sector, social enterprises, foundations and individuals—it has grown into a multi-billion-dollar international financing machine whose mission is to save lives and halt epidemics.

On the eve of its tenth anniversary, the Global Fund has been a principal driver behind increased access to treatment and care for people with HIV, armed much of Africa with bed nets to prevent the spread of malaria, and provided critical care for people suffering from tuberculosis. The organization’s demand-driven approach ensures that money goes where it is most needed, with priority given to funding programs in countries with low-income populations and a higher rate of disease.

The Global Fund is country-driven and performance-based. Countries propose activities and subsequent grants are only given to those that demonstrate progress and impact. By building local capacity and demanding local responsibility and accountability, the Global Fund’s approach incorporates best practices and lessons learned from 40 years of development assistance.
