99 Percent of the Way to Polio Eradication

We are at an important point in the battle against polio.

The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) has just launched a 3-year strategic plan that outlines a vision and the steps necessary to immunizing every last child against polio - a terrible, disfiguing illness. The plan builds on lessons learned over the years, and expert analysis of overcoming the remaining barriers to stopping polio worldwide. The Gates Foundation is honored to have joined this effort and do its small part in the fight to eradicate only the second disease ever.

When you think about it, it’s pretty amazing that polio cases have been reduced by 99%. Less than 1700 known cases are out there, crippling young children in developing countries. But we can’t stop here, the stakes are simply too high. Polio can’t be contained indefinitely - it must be eradicated. Every child deserves a polio free world and we have the tools and the know-how to make it happen.

We are confident that polio eradication is within reach.

Now, we just need to finish the job.
