The foundation's Avahan initiative focuses on HIV prevention in six high-prevalence states in India (see map below). Within those states, our partners are serving 82 districts—each with a population of about two million people—and 605 towns.
Avahan focuses on the southern and western states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Maharashtra, where HIV is primarily transmitted by sex work, and in the northeastern states of Manipur and Nagaland, where injecting drug use drives infection rates.
