Grantmaking Priorities for Child Health

View printable version

Many foundation-supported disease-specific research and control efforts benefit children (see specific diseases within our grantmaking areas). In addition to these efforts, the foundation supports initiatives to improve child and neonatal survival more broadly:

  • Reducing neonatal deaths through research to discover, develop, and clinically test new strategies and technologies to effectively address the major causes of neonatal death, including birth asphyxia, low birth weight, and sepsis.

  • Reducing child mortality through operational research to identify strategies for speeding the adoption and use of the full range of life-saving child health interventions at the community level.

  • Accelerating access to new products and interventions through the development of financing strategies and product introduction, procurement, delivery, and demand mechanisms.

  • Advocating to increase financial support and build commitment and awareness among decision makers and opinion leaders for child survival, emphasizing programs that address diarrhea, pneumonia, and neonatal causes, which together account for the majority of preventable child death. The foundation also supports efforts to better coordinate and integrate investments and programs involving maternal, neonatal, and child health. (See also Advocacy section of Critical Enabling Strategies.)
