Acute Lower Respiratory Infections

Improving Chances Against Lung Infections
Acute lower respiratory infections (ALRI), such as pneumonia, are especially threatening to children younger than 5 who live in developing countries. The illnesses cause the deaths of about 2 million children annually.

The foundation focuses support on efforts to:

  • Develop safe and effective vaccines that can be given to young children to guard against the major causes of respiratory infections

  • Build knowledge of the varied causes of respiratory infections, and better understand where the geographic distribution of each type of infection, in order to more effectively target prevention and treatment efforts

  • Find a simple and accurate way to identify children who are likely to develop complications from the infections

Developing vaccines against the varied causes of acute lower respiratory infections presents scientists with many complex problems. But vaccines have great potential to reduce illness and death associated with lung diseases.
